Powder Covered Mountain Top – BC Heli Skiing

In this heli skiing FAQ blog post, our NE Heli Skiing experts want to address some of the most frequently asked questions about heli skiing in British Columbia, Canada. These are the most common questions we get asked by our international guests who visit us from as far away as Norway, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, United Kingdom, France, and the United States, among others.

NOTE: The answers in this heli skiing FAQ apply to both
heli skiing and heli boarding in BC, Canada.

Do I need to do fitness training before heli skiing?

A. Not necessarily but still recommended.

We want you to enjoy your heli ski vacation in Canada and not end up with an injury; therefore it is important to be in shape. We recommend maintaining a healthy active lifestyle (including regular exercise) for up to 8 weeks or more prior to your trip. This will help properly prepare your body for the demands of the heli skiing experience. See our blog article entitled, How to Get Fit Pre Ski Season.

How many runs can I do each day?

A. Perhaps one of the most asked questions in our heli skiing FAQ – On average between 8 and 15 heli ski runs a day.

The number of runs will depend upon the time of year, the ski zone, the weather, the snow conditions, and the skill level of the group.

In Case of Poor Weather do you offer Snowcat Backup?

A. Absolutely!

Northern Escape Heli Skiing has a fleet of 3 Snowcats in our Cat Skiing Backup program, which will keep you skiing in all but the very worst of weather.

Can I go heli boarding instead of heli skiing?

A. Absolutely!

Northern Escape Heli Skiing is also a snowboard friendly operation.

What is meant by, “Unlimited Vertical”?

A. This is another popular heli skiing FAQ question. With Unlimited Vertical, every day you will be able to heli ski as much as you are able to beyond your vertical guarantee (within our standard day) without having to pay any extra vertical charges.

Northern Escape Heli Skiing offers the industry’s leading vertical guarantee! Historically, most vertical guarantees in heli skiing were limited to 100,000 vertical feet week per week. With the unlimited vertical option, our heli ski guests typically average over 145,000 vertical feet a week!

Can women also heli ski?

A. Absolutely!

It doesn’t matter if you are a man or a woman, as long as you can ski at an intermediate level or higher you will be able to heli ski our British Columbia heli skiing terrain.

What equipment do I need to bring?

A. Just your Ski or Snowboard boots.

Northern Escape Heli Skiing will provide you with everything else you need to enjoy your heli skiing trip in BC including fat skis! When you bring your own boots, we recommend that you keep them with you as carry on luggage.

Do you provide avalanche airbag backpacks?

A. Yes.

Safety is our number one priority. To that end we provide all the necessary safety equipment and training, including the use of a Snowpulse Avalanche Airbag Backpack and a Pulse Barryvox Avalanche Transceiver.

When is the best time to go heli skiing in BC?

A. Anytime is a great time between mid December and early April.

We never know what Mother Nature may bless us with so conditions can vary throughout the heli ski season. The follow represents a general overview only:

Early Season: Mid December to early February – great for old-growth tree skiing in deep untracked powder
Mid Season: Mid February to late March – longer days ideal for untouched glacier and high alpine heli skiing
Late Season: Late March to mid April – still possible to enjoy exceptional higher elevation heli skiing

To supplement these types of questions in our heli skiing FAQ we’ve also prepared an article entitled, “Best Time to Heli Ski BC.”

What makes NE Heli Skiing different from other BC heli skiing operators?

A. Every heli skiing FAQ should begin with this question.  Along with boutique heli skiing, there are a number of things that help separate our BC heli skiing operation from the rest including:
