Catland Cat Skiing Zone
Location – 27km N of Yellow Cedar Lodge
(North end of the Promised Land ski region)
At NE Heli Skiing, we want you to have the best heli skiing/ heli boarding experience possible. Our Catland Cat skiing zone is our Cat Skiing back-up area with over 50 km (31 miles) of snow roads and 7,000 acres of tree skiing. This Cat ski region is the place to be when it’s snowing too hard to fly our helicopters to heli skiing elevations. Every heli skiing package we offer includes a reserved seat in one of our 3 Snowcats! Our Catland Cat skiing zone isn’t used often (we average 6.5 days of heli each week) but when it is, it’s amazing skiing and riding in the old growth forests of British Columbia, Canada.

Out of 12 heli skiing zones within our terrain in BC’s Skeena Mountains, the Promised Land heli skiing zone is a favorite.
Northern Escape Heli Skiing in British Columbia, Canada, operates one of the industry’s largest terrains (5,500 sq. km), “Approximately 1/8th the size of Switzerland!”
The majority of poor weather heli skiing terrain we operate exists inside this zone. However, this steep tree skiing region also offers a large portion of the bread and butter alpine skiing. For our international guests, the Promised Land heli skiing zone is the ‘go to’ heli skiing zone.

Boutique Heli Skiing in Canada
Hovering Over the Heli Ski Site
British Columbia (BC) Canada, where heli skiing was born, is blessed to be able to offer boutique heli skiing for nearly 5 months out of the year, from mid-December through to late April, depending on the location.
This is amazing when you consider that most heli ski locations around the world have a much shorter heli ski season – usually less than 4 months. In fact, in North America, BC has a longer heli skiing season than any location in the USA including Alaska!

Best Time to Go Heli Skiing in Canada
Overlooking the Heli Ski Mountains of BC
When is the best time to heli ski in Canada?
Most Canadian heli skiing operations are found in British Columbia (BC), Canada’s western-most province. People have been heli skiing in BC for more than 50 years.
Although 75% of BC is mountainous, the warm Pacific Ocean helps to keep the weather quite moderate in the southern BC area of Vancouver. In Vancouver it rains a lot and temperatures rarely dip below freezing.
However, in the North Central region of BC, it’s a whole different story. At Northern Escape Heli Skiing in Terrace, just 2 hours easy access by air from Vancouver, instead of rain, it snows…a lot. The best time to heli ski in Canada, especially in Terrace, is between December and April when the average temperature is down around minus 5 to minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 F).

Teddy Allsopp – NE Heli Skiing Partner Profile
Teddy Allsopp, is one of Canada’s most passionate skiers and the subject of this week’s focus on our 3 part series showcasing our Northern Escape Heli Skiing partners.
Teddy Alsopp Doing what he loves to do!
Teddy is a true skier at heart. Stand in any lift line in western Canada (maybe the world) and mention his name, and you will be amazed by how many people speak out and let you know Teddy is a good friend of theirs.
In addition to his many business ventures in the restaurant and bar industry, Teddy will tell you it all started with a ski tour company out of Edmonton Alberta, The Downhill Riders.
Teddy Allsopp was the co founder of Downhill Riders Ski and Travel Company, which became one of Western Canada’s largest ski tour operators for downhill skiers and snowboarders. Downhill Riders hosted over 100,000 guests over 30 years operating ski tours throughout Western Canada, the USA, Europe, Japan, and South America.
His adventures as a ski tourism entrepreneur first began with Teddy convincing a busload of friends to go to Jasper to ski for the weekend. Teddy’s commissions gave him a free weekend of skiing and beer money. Being the entrepreneur he is, Teddy turned this into a much larger business with many weekends having 20 or 30 buses filled with his friends going skiing and snowboarding.
John Forrest, our NE Heli Skiing president and general manager, actually first met Teddy back in the mid 80’s on one of these ski trips and they became good friends. They eventually became business partners in Northern Escape Heli Skiing. Read more

How to Get Fit Pre Ski Season
Get fit for heli skiing and don’t be caught floundering in the powder this heli ski season due to sore muscles; with a little pre ski season workout you can get your body ready for the mountains.
Stretching for the Entire Body
Training your body and choosing exercises to get fit for skiing is a nebulous concept at best. After all, how hard is it to prepare for heli skiing or boarding when you are just carving through deep powder and then riding a helicopter back to the top of the mountain?
Don’t be fooled into thinking that heli skiing fitness is over-rated. You’ll be using muscles that most likely, you haven’t engaged a lot during the off-season. And keep in mind; heli skiing and heli boarding are definitely high intensity sports. You can enjoy your heli skiing trip a lot more by preparing your body ahead of time. In the end, you won’t regret investing a little time and doing the right exercises to get fit for skiing…but you may regret it if you don’t! Read more
