Inside Northern Escape’s 3,373 km² of Legendary Heli-Ski Terrain

At Northern Escape Heli-Skiing, our terrain sits just below the southern tip of Alaska on the Western coast of British Columbia, a sweet spot where the power of Northwest Pacific storms meets the playful terrain of the Kitimat Mountain Range. The result? Some of the deepest, most consistent powder on the planet. Our far-north latitude keeps temperatures cool and the snow quality exceptional, while our proximity to the coast delivers frequent, powerful snowfalls. We get the kind of consistent storms that fill in lines overnight. While this can bring weather challenges higher-latitude operations farther north, we enjoy incredible tree skiing that stays accessible in nearly any weather thanks to our Cat Ski Backup.

Our 3,373 square kilometres (833,571 acres) of wild backcountry heli-skiing terrain at Northern Escape has something for everyone. From the sweeping glaciers and steep couloirs of our alpine zones to the ancient cedar forests loaded with bottomless pillows, the terrain diversity is endless. Some of our runs drop over 1,500 vertical metres (a vertical mile!) from high peaks to deep valley bottoms.

Even our cat-skiing backup zone is enormous: 23.35 km² (5,769 acres). For perspective, that’s about the size of Whistler-Blackcomb which we use only when the weather’s not suitable to fly.

Why Size Matters

Sometimes smaller is better, like when talking about group size, but when it comes to the size of your ski area – Size Matters!

Our immense tenure means more terrain choice, fewer tracks, and better snow, even weeks into the season. Unlike operators that have many lodges with small areas or those that rely on glading to open up terrain, all three of Northern Escape’s heli ski lodges have access to our vast backcountry terrain, giving guests limitless options and minimal overlap between groups. Our powerful Koala and A Star helicopters can access untouched lines across thousands of square kilometres, so whatever the weather or group ability, there’s always a zone delivering perfect turns.

The key to maximizing your time in this massive wilderness is choosing Small Group, Semi-Private, or Private program. With fewer guests per helicopter, you’ll explore more terrain at your preferred pace, and never get held back by slower groups. Our Snowcat Skiing Backup ensures that even when storms roll through, your day isn’t wasted. While operations in places like Alaska can lose up to 50% of days to weather, our guests keep skiing, earning Northern Escape its reputation for being the most reliable operation.

Our Favourite Zones

Here’s just a taste of the zones that make up our playground:

Catland - Our Industry Leading Backup Cat Ski Area, Exclusively for Backup Cat Skiing

At Northern Escape, we have a dedicated snowcat area with over 35km of cat ski roads in a zone larger than Whistler Blackcomb. On average, we utilize our four snowcats about one day per week or less. Our Cat Skiing area is close by and accessible by helicopter in all but the most extreme weather. The terrain is entirely tree skiing by design, providing the visibility needed when conditions above treeline are whiteout. When the weather improves, the helicopter picks guests up directly from the cat terrain to resume heli-skiing. With 15 landing zones located in Catland it’s easy to access our cat ski terrain or, when the weather breaks, catch a helicopter ride and resume heli skiing.
