Troy Grant enjoying another epic day in the mountains—living the dream as a Northern Escape heli-ski guide!

At Northern Escape Heli-Skiing, the magic of deep powder skiing in British Columbia’s Skeena Mountains is brought to life by passionate guides like Troy Grant. His dedication to sharing the wonder of the mountains creates experiences that leave a lasting impression on every guest he encounters. We recently sat down with Troy to learn more about his journey as a heli-ski guide and the moments that make it all worthwhile.

A Calling to the Mountains

For Troy, guiding isn’t just a job—it’s a calling.

I became a heli-ski guide because I enjoy sharing my passion for the mountains,

It’s easy to see how that passion fuels his work. Whether it’s carving through untouched snow or witnessing the awe in a guest’s eyes as they step out of a helicopter onto the pristine alpine powder, Troy’s love for the mountains is at the heart of every adventure.

When you imagine the life of a heli-ski guide, it might sound like a dream. For Troy, it’s that—and more.

“Each morning, we start with a team meeting to assess hazards and ensure everyone stays safe. Then, it’s breakfast with the guests, where the excitement starts to build. After that, we head into the field for the most magical day of skiing you can imagine.”

The day doesn’t end when the skis come off. Evenings at Northern Escape are just as special. Après-ski by the fire is a chance to laugh, share stories, and bond over the day’s adventures. A final meeting with the guide team wraps things up, and then it’s time to sit down for a well-earned dinner.

“It’s a full day, but every moment is worth it,” Troy says with a smile.

Moments That Stay With You

In a career filled with powder days and incredible views, some memories stand out above the rest. For Troy, one moment was particularly meaningful.

We had a guest last year who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. It was his last ski trip, and I had the privilege of being his guide. That was really special.

The mountains have a way of creating profound connections, and it’s these moments that remind us of the power of nature and adventure.

Guiding First-Time Heli-Skiiers

While Troy enjoys guiding all types of skiers, there’s something uniquely rewarding about working with first-time heli-skiers.

“They’re usually filled with anxiety at the start, but I love helping them relax and fully enjoy the experience. By the end of the day, they’re the most excited people out there. That first taste of deep powder skiing leaves a huge impression—it’s incredible to witness.”

Helping guests conquer their fears and experience the joy of heli-skiing for the first time is a highlight of his work. For anyone considering their first heli-skiing experience, Troy has some wise words to share:

“A great man once said, ‘If you don’t do it this year, you’ll just be another year older when you do.’ And that great man was Warren Miller.” Whether you’re a seasoned skier or someone dreaming of your first powder-filled run, there’s no better time to take the leap.
