How to Plan a Private Heli-Ski Trip in BC for your Group

A skier in a red jacket carves a turn through deep powder on an open alpine slope, with a helicopter and a line of skiers visible on the ridge behind.

You don’t get an experience like this every day… Unless you’re at Northern Escape.

A private heli-skiing trip in British Columbia involves booking the use of the lodge, the helicopter and the guides for one group only, with no shared schedule and no strangers being on the helicopter. Northern Escape Heli-Skiing organizes private trips from Terrace in the Skeena Range. The following explains how to plan such a trip and also describes what it's like when you arrive.

Quick Answer:

  • The Skeena Spey Private package can accommodate up to 5 skiers, while a buyout of the Mountain Lodge can hold up to 10 people.

  • Book 12 to 18 months ahead, with the weeks in January and February going first.

  • Vertical space is included without having to pay an extra charge per foot!

  • A snowcat is ready to be used on the days when the helicopter is unable to fly.

What Does a Private Heli-Ski Trip in BC Involve?

On a private heli-skiing trip in British Columbia, the entire group has exclusive use of the accommodation, the aircraft and the guiding team. No one from outside your group takes part in the tour. Northern Escape provides two options.

Painting the Picture: What a Private Heli-Ski Day is Like

It's dark and cold outside and no one's rushing you.

When you go downstairs, you'll find coffee and a fire that's been started while you were still asleep. Outside, through the window, the Skeena River's moving slowly and appears black under the snow, and one of the members of your group is standing by the glass looking at the sky as skiers do.

There's no lobby, and you won't find any strangers in identical jackets who are waiting to be divided into groups. It's your own people and it's your own day!

The guides enter and give you a report on what they've seen from up high. You then discuss this together at breakfast time. Once the helicopter takes off from the pad outside the door, everyone in it wants the same thing from the day.

The first run happens when the machine sets you down on a ridge and then leaves, taking the sound with it. For a few seconds, there's absolutely nothing… No engine, no town, no conversation. Just wind and a wild white slope stretching away below.

You push off, and the snow rises above your knees. Nothing else gets a look-in for the rest of the day!

Who a Private Trip Suits

Private is less about budget than about who you want beside you when the door opens.

  • People who ski at about the same level and who'd rather ski than talk about skiing.

  • Families with kids of different abilities, since a guide can shape the day instead of forcing everyone to compromise.

  • Companies rewarding a small team, where the lodge doubles as a meeting room.

When three people have flexible dates they usually do better on a shared week, and a private arrangement breaks even when there are five or more.

How to Plan a Private Heli-Ski Trip in BC

    Trip Planning Steps

    1. Start by booking the group. Since the private option is charged on a per-trip basis, the cost for each skier decreases as the group size increases.
    2. Choose the format. Five or fewer points go to the Skeena Spey Private, and six through ten points go to a Mountain Lodge buyout.
    3. Select the window. Trips last between 3 and 7 days, from December to April, and January and February have the coldest, deepest snow.
    4. Check in early. Private weeks are booked 12 to 18 months in advance.
    5. Sort your travel. Vancouver to Terrace (YXT) takes 90 minutes, after which you can travel by helicopter in 15 minutes. International guests should check the entry requirements for Canada early on.
    6. Pack light. The skis, boards, poles and avalanche equipment are supplied, and you're responsible for bringing your boots and outerwear.

What does a Private Heli-Ski Package Consist of?

The Skeena Spey Private package includes the lodge and helicopter, two guides, a private snowcat, unlimited vertical, all meals, gear, massage therapy and concierge service from the moment you arrive in Terrace.

On paper, it's a list of inclusions, but in the lodge, it looks different: there are self-contained cabins with the river outside, a kitchen staff who find out on the first night what your group drinks and then stop asking, and wet gear that's taken at the door and dry by morning.

Many ski trips are luxurious, and luxury could include sharing a helicopter with people you've just met. If a trip's private, then all the seats, all the runs and all the nights at the lodge are exclusively for your group.

The prices given are on a per-trip basis. Since there's no limit on vertical drop, a good weather week won't ever turn into an extra charge. Curious what it costs? See our guide to heli-skiing costs.

Private Heli-ski Trip FAQs

Does everyone have to be an expert skier? Not necessarily. A confident intermediate skier on ungroomed slopes is enough. Private guiding works for mixed groups because the guides adjust the terrain to the group.

What happens if the helicopter can't fly? A snowcat takes the group into the cat terrain. Guests come here to heli-ski, and most days that's what happens, but a low-visibility day is still a ski day. Avalanche Canada publishes the public forecasts for this region.

Plan the Trip of a Lifetime

There are three choices to make: the number of people, which lodge, and which week. The week you book is one in which no one travelling by helicopter is a stranger. Priority is given to the groups that make their request first.
