Where’s Yellow Cedar Lodge, and How do I Get There?
Yellow Cedar Lodge sits on the banks of the Skeena River, minutes from Terrace, BC. The transfer from Terrace Airport (YXT) to the lodge is approximately 30 minutes by private shuttle. From Vancouver International (YVR), it's a 90-minute connecting flight with Air Canada. No long bus rides or four-hour transfers eating up your whole day! You land, you have a quick transfer, and the Skeena Range is right outside.
What’s the Snow like in the Skeena Range?
The Skeena Range sits in a particular position in northern BC: far enough west to pull Pacific storm moisture inland, far enough north that the temperatures keep that moisture cold and dry. Plus, the Skeenas have one of the most consistent snowpacks in the world.
The Skeena Mountains receive 20 to 30 metres of snowfall each season (upwards of 100 feet), and the snowpack averages around 4 metres (13 feet) at treeline by mid-season. December and January bring colder temperatures and heavier precipitation, with fewer compacted layers in the snowpack, so early season often skis the deepest. January and February are the heart of it: midwinter powder, dry and cold, the conditions people plan trips around. March and April bring longer days and a settled base, with bigger alpine terrain windows between storm cycles.

When the helicopters can't fly, the snowcats go out. Northern Escape runs a dedicated snowcat skiing area with over 35 kilometres of cat ski roads that operate independently of flying conditions. Guests ski sheltered tree terrain while the alpine reloads above. Storm days are ski days, and we don’t charge extra! Snowcat backup is included in every package.
Most heli-ski operators don't have this. At fly-only operations, a storm day is a lodge day, but at Northern Escape, you get to ride the storm.
